Eyelash Extensions and Lash Tinting

Eyelash Extensions

Eyelash ExtensionsEyelash extensions are the new rave these days. Don’t have lashes? No problem! We have an app for that. Okay, just kidding, but really? How cool is it that you don’t have to be born with them to have beautiful long lashes? Our fabulous lash techs here at Cru’ are truly talented. If you know a little bit about eyelash extensions then you know they are individually placed on your real lashes and that you must book with an experienced tech. Someone who knows what they’re doing. Just how you wouldn’t go to just anyone to get your balayage color for your summer “do”, DO NOT just go to anyone for those luscious lashes. Here are a few Eyelash Extension tips and rules:

  1. Do your homework! A truly experienced eyelash technician will have a portfolio. If you really want natural and full looking lashes that won’t rip your natural lashes out, make sure you meet someone who is experienced.
  2. Make sure the lash technician and spa you choose to visit is clean and follows protocol when it comes to hygiene. You don’t want to get someone else’s pink eye from lack of cleanliness. Gross!
  3. Check how long the technician takes to put the lashes on. Some techs can take up to 2 ½ hours to apply them. Some only take 1 hour. For those who only take 1 hour, make sure they aren’t quick for lack of skill. (this is where their portfolio comes handy).
  4. Once you have found “the one” and everything comes out beautifully, make sure you know how to maintain them!
  5. Eyelash extensions 101: No water is to come in contact with your eyes within 24 hours of getting your extensions. Just bypass the shower all together. Make sure you’re all showered up before your appointment.
  6. No water-proof mascara! If you’ve ever used waterproof makeup, you know how difficult it is to remove, which is great during the summer time when you take a dip in the pool. It’s not so great if you are wearing lash extensions. The more you have to rub t mascara off, the easier those extensions will come off. And honestly, you won’t even need mascara once you have long, beautiful lash extensions!
  7. And this last one brings me to our next topic: no tinting your eyelash extensions! Want to tint your lashes? Do it before the application!

Eyelash Tinting

Eyelash tinting is a great way to bring your natural lashes to life, or make them match your extensions. If you’re a blonde, red head, or even light brunette, eyelash tinting is a great way to make your natural lashes less noticeable with eyelash extensions. If you aren’t quite ready for the commitment of lash extensions, then lash tinting is a perfect solution to create some drama for your lashes when mascara is applied. Lash tinting lasts 4-6 weeks and only takes 15 minutes!

Esthetician Spotlight: Arlin

Meet Arlin

Arlin is one of our fabulous estheticians here at Crú. Before we reveal her tips, here is a little bit of background about her.

“I have been attracted to the beauty industry and have had a passion for skin care ever since I was a teenager.  Taking care of my skin was always a priority to me; I would research different products and try them out myself.  I started getting a lot of compliments on my skin and people would ask me what I did to make my skin look so awesome.  I loved letting people know what I was doing with my skin and giving them tips on what products to use.  I then realized I would love to do it as a profession!  I wanted to help people look and feel great about their skin.  After all, our skin is the largest organ in our body, it should be our number 1 priority!  Fast forward to now, after school and with 2 years of experience under my belt, I have learned a lot!  I want to make sure people use the right products for their skin type and be knowledgeable about what is and isn’t safe for them.  I love what I do and I love that every client and their skin gives me a unique opportunity to help them feel great.  One of my favorite things in the whole world is getting positive feedback from my clients.  When they are happy, I’m happy!”

I absolutely adore Arlin and I LOVE her facials. I wanted to get some insight about her skin care.  Here are the top questions our readers have about skin care:

What would you consider to be the most important part of your skin care routine?  What are the most essential skin-care procedures for those who don’t have a skin-care routine?

  • “Cleanse every morning and every night.  If you have oily skin, use a foam cleanser.  If you have dry skin, use a creamy/milky cleanser.
  • Use a moisturizer with SPF.  Anything less than 50 SPF is basically useless.
  • Exfoliate once a week.
  • Drink lots of water.  Most of my client’s problems are due to lack of water.”

What is a big “NO-NO” when it comes to skin care?

“DO NOT try to pop your pimples at home.  If you do it wrong, (which most of you do) you can cause permanent scarring.  Leave the pimple alone!  Let it shrink on its own.  I promise you it will.  If you are too impatient to let it do its own thing, mix 2 tablespoons of Baking Soda with enough water to create a paste, apply it to the pimple and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.  This will get rid of the oils in your skin and allow it to shrink a little.  Don’t have time to sit for 15 minutes?  Grab an ice cube and hold it to your pimple for 3 minutes.”

So if extractions at home aren’t recommended, what should we do about stubborn whiteheads?

“Getting a facial at least once a month will decrease the amount of breakouts you get.  Cleaning out those pores regularly is going to make a big difference.”

Can you really reduce large pores? Or is there no hope?

“Yes, you definitely can.  But, if they have been enlarged for a long period of time, it’s not going to be easy.  You have to be VERY diligent about cleansing twice a day everyday.  Get a cleanser with salicylic acid.  Salicylic acid breaks through the oils on your skin and allows the cleanser to penetrate deep into your pores.  Cleaning out your pores will allow the pore to shrink back to its normal size.  Never go to bed without taking your make-up off first. That will definitely prevent your pores from being able to breathe.  There are also at home peels you can do every other week to give your pores a deep clean. Peels can be a little scary so if you don’t know what you are doing, let the professionals do it.  We offer chemical and organic peels at Cru that are awesome!”

If you want to go above and beyond with skin care, what can you do at home?

Obviously getting a facial once a month is a must if you want to be on top of your skin care game.  Twice a month is even better.  But we (estheticians) aren’t with you every day to do the work for you at home, and there are definitely things you can do at home to get the best results for your skin. Drinking a lot of water is most important because SKIN NEEDS HYDRATION. Another way to hydrate your skin is STEAM!  There are small face steamers you can purchase from a beauty store for $20-$30 or you can go the old fashion way and boil a pot of water, and put your face over it for 15 minutes, 3 times a week.  Moisture will make for happy pores!

I hope her tips were helpful!  I love learning more from the professionals on our team.  There is a reason they get paid to do what they do.  Nothing can replace the experience of a licensed professional.  So, if you have any questions about your skin please, please, please make an appointment with your esthetician and get the right answers!  If you don’t have an esthetician, give us a call! We would love for you to meet with one of ours!

What Your Skin is Telling You

Oxygen Facial

OH. MY. GOSH! I am obsessed! I am truly obsessed with the Oxygen Infusion Facial! If you’ve never tried it, you absolutely need to experience one. A lot of you may not know what it is, (I didn’t know what it was until I saw the machine) so I’ve done a ton of research on it, and I am here to tell you all about it! So the first thing I did was Google it, duh!

The first interesting thing that appeared in my search was from the NY Times and surprisingly from 2006. It’s been around that long! Why is this not a more popular treatment??? I have no idea! Well, here is how the NY Times describes an Oxygen Facial and I couldn’t explain it better myself: “The (Oxygen) facial involves a machine that sprays atomized moisturizers onto the skin using a stream of pressurized oxygen. The treatment is supposed to hydrate skin immediately, making the face appear smoother and plumper. Ms. Peck is referred to as “Madonna’s personal oxygen treatment facialist on the web site www.madonna.com.”

So this is also known as the Madonna Facial, or at least what the estheticians and I at the spa call it. Have you ever noticed how glowy and plump Madonna’s face looks? Any woman nearing 60 doesn’t look that great by accident. Well luckily, I can tell you by experience that this facial has a lot to do with her radiant skin. I had the privilege of trying out this amazing facial 3 times and I was floored by the results. Let me tell you a little bit about my skin.

My concerns are:

  • Dry skin (which I wasn’t aware of until my [licensed & awesome] esthetician told me my skin was super dry)
  • Blackheads (yuck)
  • Hormonal break outs (why meee)
  • Uneven skin tone (Lately, I only feel comfortable with the look of my skin if I have foundation on)

So after I spoke to my esthetician about all of my concerns, she recommended an Oxygen facial and Microdermabrasion treatment every other week. Microdermabrasion removes the top layer of dead skin cells from your face and reveals the newer, softer skin underneath. I really needed that because of my clogged pores (causing black heads) and dry skin (causing build up of dead skin cells). So here is my before and after!

I couldn’t believe how great my skin started looking and feeling! My skin tone evened out and my breakouts vanished! It’s going to take a little longer for the scarring from my breakouts to go away but my esthetician said if I stick to my facial regime (and do my homework in between) the scarring will go away soon enough. I no longer feel like I have to wear make up every time I go out. I actually love NOT wearing make up so I can show off how awesome my skin looks. So lesson learned: there is A LOT you can do to take your skin to new levels. You just have to be willing to prioritize your skin.

LED Light Therapy

So, call me cliché, but the way I always hear about the latest and greatest is if celebs are doing it. Well, the most recent thing I’ve seen that piqued my curiosity, was some sort of light mask.  I keep seeing different celebrities like Jessica Alba and Kourtney Kardashian post videos on Snap Chat, or pictures on Instagram using it.

And I thought, what in the world is that thing?! It kind of looks like a tanning bed, but for your face (also, just a little bit creepy).  Well, just the other day my Spa Director told me about an enhancement that we will soon offer for our facials called, LED Light Therapy.  After reading about it, I realized that was the same as those masks! They are LED Light Therapy Masks.

If you’re still not really sure what that is, then let me explain.

LED Light Therapy is known to have many benefits.  There are a few different color lights you can use. Cru’ Day Spa uses Red and Blue.  Red is used to improve lines and wrinkles, and blue is used to treat acne. The awesome thing about LED Light Therapy is that it is all natural and has no side effects.  So if you have a breakout or any white heads that you want to get rid of, DO NOT PICK AT YOUR FACE.

I have learned the hard way that picking at your face is never a good idea. Instead, book yourself a facial and add LED Light Therapy!  This is a great option for those monthly hormonal break outs.  Another awesome treatment for acne is a High Frequency Current treatment.  I know, it sounds a little scary.  I promise it’s not! It may shock you a little at first but it’s actually kind of relaxing after a while. High Frequency facials have many benefits. Here are just a few:

  • Improves non inflamed and inflamed oily and troubled skin
  • Stimulates your skin for a youthful appearance
  • Reduces the appearace of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduces blackheads and shrinks large pores
  • Fades dark under eye circles
  • Decongest puffy eyes
  • Improves the appearance of cellulite

Woah. I need all of the above. ASAP. So guess what I did?  I got zapped!  I woke up on a day like any other day, with 3 (hormonal) breakouts.  Ewwwww.  Why? I’ve been washing and my face every day. Why?!  Because hormones, that’s why. Sometimes you just can’t prevent break outs no matter how hard you try.  That is why there are skin care professionals with glorious skin care secrets like LED Light Therapy and High Frequency Current to save the day!  Here are my before and after pictures!

Dry Body Brushing

Dry Body Brushing

Ever wonder how models and celebs are always radiant and keep their skin so smooth and all year round??  Well fortunately Dry Body Brushingwe know Miranda Kerr’s secret. Dailymail.co.uk tells us that “After she’s had her lemon water and before she slips into the shower, Miranda swears by dry body brushing, which she describes as an ‘integral part’ of her daily regime.”  What in the world is dry body brushing, you ask?

You know those super impersonal spa gift baskets you get from a coworker or someone that doesn’t know you very well?  Well most of them have a little brush or two stuffed inside that usually end up some where under your bathroom sink tossed behind your cotton balls and gigantic box of Q-Tips.

Those are used for dry brushing. It’s pretty self-explanatory, you begin by brushing the skin over your entire body in a sweeping motion towards your heart. This exfoliates the skin, but also to unclog pores to eliminate toxins from your body.

Annet King, director of global education for Dermalogica and the International Dermal Institute, says the procedure helps remove “stagnant toxins” that break down connective tissue, leading to cellulite.

Did I just hear that correctly? Dry brushing helps to remove cellulite? That’s it, I’m sold. So basically, dry brushing is THE BOMB.  Here is a simple “How To” on Dry Brushing.

To get started, follow the simple steps below:

Step One:  Begin by purchasing a natural (not synthetic) bristle brush preferably with a long handle so it can reach all areas of your body.  Also, if dry brushing is going to be a new part of your regime, make sure to find a bristle brush with soft bristles, as to not damage the skin.

Step Two:  Get naked for this one!  The best times to dry brush are before showering, before you slip on your gym clothes or before bedtime.

Step Three:  Begin brushing by starting at the bottoms of your feet and work your way up towards your calves moving in long sweeping motions toward your heart. Always brush toward your heart with firm pressure as to invigorate the skin. We suggest brushing several times in each area, and overlapping as you go.

Step Four:  Slip into the shower and rinse off the dead skin. The combination of the warm steam from the shower will help to detoxify and eliminate toxins and your newly fresh skin will open its pores and soften.

Step Five:  Pat yourself dry and remember to moisturize. Your skin will be more receptive to natural fruit oil like rose hip or coconut oil.

Twice a day is recommended for best results.  Try this for 30 days and see the results of brighter and smoother skin.  If you’re wondering how to clean your new beauty brush, it’s simple. Soap and water once a week will do the trick and leave out to dry.

Cru Day Spa will be offering Dry Brushing in 2017 as a sweet enhancement that you can add to any massage! Add dry brushing to your massages, do your part at home, and come spring time, your legs will be ready for those daisy dukes!
