What is the Emerald laser?

Emerald, made by Erchonia®, is a low-level laser that uses ten green (532 nm) laser diodes. They sweep soft lines of light across the treatment area while you rest comfortably on a treatment table. The light is non-thermal, so there’s no heating, freezing, suction, or needles, and you can go straight back to your day afterward.

Emerald is FDA-cleared as a non-invasive aesthetic treatment for reducing body circumference in adults with a BMI of up to 40. According to Erchonia, it is the only laser with this clearance. Most body contouring devices are cleared for a narrower range of guests, so Emerald can welcome more of you.

How it works

According to Erchonia, Emerald’s green laser energy prompts fat cells to temporarily form tiny openings in their membranes. That lets some of their stored contents move into the space around the cells, where the body’s own natural processes handle them over time. The fat cell itself isn’t heated, frozen, or destroyed, which is why there’s nothing to recover from.

The science behind the FDA clearance

• FDA-cleared indication: “a non-invasive dermatological aesthetic treatment for the reduction of body circumference in individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) up to 40 kg/m².”

• Tested against a placebo: in a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study of adults with a BMI between 30 and 40, 71% of guests treated with the Emerald laser (20 of 28) achieved a combined reduction of at least 7.2 cm (about 2.8 inches) across the hips, waist, and upper abdomen after four weeks, compared with 12% in the sham (placebo) group.

• Average change: in the same study, the treated group’s combined measurements decreased by an average of 10.5 cm (about 4.1 inches) after four weeks, compared with 1.8 cm (about 0.7 inches) in the sham group. Among those who reached the 7.2 cm mark, the average total reduction two weeks after treatment ended was 15.2 cm (about 6 inches).

Study protocol: 12 sessions over four weeks (three per week), 30 minutes each, with 15 minutes on the front and 15 minutes on the back. FDA clearance means the FDA found the device substantially equivalent to legally marketed devices for the indication above. It is not an FDA “approval”. Emerald is not a weight-loss treatment, and individual results vary.

What a session is like

• Consultation: a free visit to talk through your goals, take your starting measurements, and recommend a plan.
• Your session: you’ll lie back on a comfortable treatment table while Emerald’s arm rests a few inches above you and sweeps green light over the treatment area, front and back, for about 30 minutes. It’s hands-free and quiet. You’ll wear protective eyewear, and many guests simply relax.
• Afterward: no downtime, so you can return to work, lunch, or your workout right away.
• Over time: results are measured in inches, and changes build over a series of sessions. We’ll track your measurements as you go. Individual results vary.

Is Emerald FDA-approved?

What does it feel like?
